Rooted Installations

Rooted Installations

Emily Glass

Eat local. Shop local. Buy local. Though our world is increasingly more globally connected by the day, supporting your city or town remains a powerful sentiment. The town of Woodstock, Vermont and the surrounding Upper Valley are hubs for locally grown food and fine, artisanally crafted goods. Craftsmanship and sustainability are important here, and in this studio, we will explore how they influence one another by creating functional art installations that are inspired by a local maker and designed to grow or produce a specific food.

Similar to city-wide art installation projects that highlight local culture, like the CowParade and its derivatives in cities around the world, the pieces designed will be emblematic of the creative spirit of Vermont. As our basis for design, we will collaborate with artists, craftsmen, farmers, and artisanal food producers to understand the relationships between their different industries and how they work together to create a culture specific to this area. Students' prototypes will be installed and exhibited around town.
